What does a veil have to do with baseboards and ducted channel heating?

A veil has a clear function - it shields something. And this is exactly what is achieved by the warm air veil which is created by Variotherm Baseboards. This warm air veil is built up in front of cold walls within a short period of time by the baseboard heating system. This blocks the cold which is released by the walls, while the walls are warmed up at the same time.

Shown below: infra-red photos during the warming up process.

Heating not in operation.
Temperature:
Wall surface: +15°C,
Window inside +8°C.
After 5 minutes operation:
Heating element heats, warm
veil warms,
Wall surface already has
temperature of approx. +18°C.

After 15 minutes operation:
Wall surface temperature as far
as window parapet + 23°C,
Window surface +12°C.
After 30 minutes operation:
Overall wall surface approx. +23°C,
Window glass +14°C,
Window frame +16°C.

When there is no cold being released by the walls, people in the room feel comfortably warm. The warmed up walls give off long-wave, infra-red radiant heating, which warms up the room. Radiant heating is especially pleasant because - just like the warmth of the sun - it corresponds to the body's own warmth. Radiant heating is the traditional form of warmth which is radiated by tiled stoves. It is healthy and natural!

The Coanda effect. The physical pre-condition for the effectiveness of baseboard heating:at the start of the last century the physicist Henri Conada found that warm air always rises up vertical surfaces (e.g. cold outer walls). Our baseboard heating uses this principle to achieve its outstanding efficiency. Thanks to the Coanda effect baseboard heating has a further positive characteristic: as very little air movement is created during heating, minimal dust is raised as a consequence. Beneficial for the respiratory passages!!!

Coanda-Effect:
  • The air is warmed and forms a veil of warm air along the cold walls.
  • The cold released by the walls is screened out
  • The walls warm up and release radiant heating

The diagram below shows the temperature profile in a room measured by a calibrated climatic probe. The low temperature difference between the floor and the ceiling is easy to recognise. The dotted line is the perceived radiant heating as shown by the probe. This is significantly higher than the actual ambient air temperature.

This proves that comfortable warmth is already achieved by low, energy-saving ambient air temperatures.
