Kindergarten Renovation: Underfloor Heating retrofitted in a short time

Welcome to the Unterlangenkampfen Kindergarten, Tyrol. A loving institution that has been creating shining children's eyes and joyful children's laughter for generations. However, time also leaves its marks, and the kindergarten is now facing an important phase of redesign and modernization.

It was a wonderful idea: Each group and each room was equipped with different floor coverings. Ranging from classic tile floors to PVC floors and even cork floors. Originally designed to offer the children a varied play experience, the kindergarten now wants to take the next step towards comfort and sustainability.

The challenge was to preserve the charm and playful variety while simultaneously integrating an energy efficient and environmentally friendly underfloor heating into the rooms. But which solution is best suited for all the different floor coverings.

Several floor coverings, a sensible solution

At the beginning, it was considered to remove the existing floor and mill the screed to subsequently lay any heating pipes. However, this idea was relatively quickly dismissed after consultation with the innovative installer Sanitär Technik Wörgl and our experienced on-site advisor for three reasons:

- Milling an existing screed is nothing other than a weakening of the material. No one provides a warranty that the screed will hold.

- Those milled channels ultimately have to be filled with a compound again. Thus, moisture is back in the building – and therefore slower construction progress!

- It should also be noted that the milling dust must be disposed of – and this again incurs additional costs.

The best friend of the floor layer.

The kindergarten ultimately decided on the simplest solution: Our VarioComp – the underfloor heating in drywall construction was installed over 270 m2. The 18-millimeter thin gypsum fiber VarioComp boards are laid on an even, dry, and load-bearing substrate. These VarioComp boards are specially milled with knobs. This allows the VarioProFile Pipe 11.6x1.5 (aluminium multi-layer composite pipe) to be laid individually. This guarantees an even pipe spacing. At the same time, the pipe is stably fixed between the knobs. The heating pipe can be laid in a meander or spiral pattern.

Finally, the special VarioComp filling compound is poured and leveled. After an exceptionally short drying time of around 24 hours, the floor covering can be applied, and the floor layer can come! Anything that pleases is allowed: wood parquet, tiles, stoneware, laminate, or carpet.
