One system - four functions
The cooling ceiling with Acoustic Surface is a flexible panel system made of ecologically tested gypsum fiberboards, in which the VarioModular-Pipes (aluminium multi-layer composite pipes) are already integrated into the back of the panel
Cooling + Heating + Reducing Sound + Finished Ceiling
The acoustic ceiling dampens sound. The perforation pattern and the acoustic fleece on the back of the module panel direct the sound into the cavity behind it. The sound is broken. More precisely, the acoustic ceiling reduces the reverberation time in the room.
How a cooling ceiling works
With the Variotherm Ceiling Cooling with Acoustic Surface, you can stay cool through the summer – without drafts and silently. As a water-based Ceiling Cooling, the ModularCeiling Acoustic is an area cooling system and operates through radiation exchange: Cold water circulates through the aluminium multi-layer composite pipes, cooling the ceiling over its entire surface. Humans release excess body heat to the cool surfaces. A pleasant and cool indoor climate spreads.
The Ceiling Cooling with Acoustic Surface operates free of drafts and cools silently. This allows the cooling ceiling to run at night as well. The ideal alternative to air conditioning!
Feel-good climate: This is why surface cooling is so comfortable
Unlike an air conditioner, a cooling ceiling with an Acoustic Surface does not blow cold air through the room. It works through radiation exchange. The human body can slowly adjust to the temperature difference between outside and the pleasantly cool room. No cold shock, no stiff neck! Cooling ceilings operate silently and can run at night, ensuring a good night's sleep. Our tip: A well-insulated house with effective thermal mass saves money, as the rooms require less energy to be cooled.
How our ceiling heating works
The ceiling heating radiates the room and warms it comfortably. It is laid over a large area and can therefore operate with low flow temperatures. Warm air rises. Do we then get a hot head and cold feet with ceiling heating? No. Because good ceiling heating systems work, unlike conventional convection heating systems (e.g., radiators), with pleasant and healthy radiant heat and very small temperature differences.
As a surface heating system, the heating ceiling uses the entire surface for heat transfer. The rays spread out at a right angle to the surface. With ceiling heating, this means from top to bottom. When the rays hit a solid object, it is warmed. The same principle of radiation exchange also applies to the cooling function of our ModularCeiling Acoustic.
Are there also disadvantages to ceiling cooling?
When comparing the acquisition costs with an air conditioning system, these are higher for a ceiling cooling. However, during operation, the energy costs for a water-based ceiling cooling are up to 30% lower than the electricity costs of an air conditioning system. Thus, the surface heating and cooling pays for itself within a few years.
Additionally, the ceiling cools silently and without drafts – it can also run at night.
FLEXIBLE Panel System
The cooling ceiling is a flexible panel system made of ecologically tested gypsum fiberboards. The VarioModular-Pipes (aluminium multi-layer composite pipes) are already integrated into the back of the panel. It is both cooling and ceiling in one. When connected to a heating source in winter, it becomes a ceiling heating.
This is how a Ceiling Cooling/Heating with Acoustic Surface is constructed

3 Pre-insulated VarioModular pipe (supply lines for the heating circuits)
Tested acoustic panel.
The Variotherm Acoustic Panel (Block-Perforation) including the inserted module pipe was tested by TÜV Rheinland in Nuremberg. In a modern reverberation room with a volume of nearly 400 m³ and approximately 7 seconds reverberation time, eight different test specimens were set up. All standard frequencies were thoroughly tested over a defined period.
The test aimed to determine the sound absorption level that the ModularPanels with acoustic function are expected to provide when installed. The result: The excellent sound-absorbing effect of the Acoustic Surface can be demonstrated and guaranteed based on the test conducted by TÜV!
Sound-absorbing Acoustic Surface
The acoustic ceiling effectively dampens sound. Through the precisely developed perforation patterns and the integrated acoustic fleece on the back, the sound is directed into the cavity behind, where it is broken and effectively "absorbed." This significantly reduces disturbing reverberation, resulting in a pleasant, quiet room acoustics.
Individual planning.
We not only deliver high-quality heating and cooling systems, but also plan each project individually – house by house, room by room, precisely according to our comfort criteria. Thanks to precise heating and cooling load calculations, we ensure maximum efficiency and optimal comfort.
This creates a tailor-made solution that perfectly fits your project – for a pleasant indoor climate all year round.
WELL THOUGHT OUT TECHNOLOGY
The substructure of the Variotherm ceiling cooling consists of metal or wood. The basis for the ceiling cooling/heating is the substructure made of wood or metal profiles. The construction can be erected with or without surface cladding or cavity insulation and vapor barriers (vapor barrier).
Substructures made of wood or metal.
It should be noted:
For wooden substructures, the construction timber used must be sufficiently dry and straight and comply with ÖNORM EN 338 (sorting class C24). For metal substructures, the profiles must be made of soft unalloyed steels with a double-sided galvanization coating of at least 100 g/m² according to ÖNORM/DIN 18182-1. The substructure must be designed for the weight of the ModularPanels (20.5 kg/m²). Additional loads such as ceiling lights, multi-layer cladding, and built-in components must be considered separately.
The module panels with acoustic surface
The biologically tested gypsum fiberboard consists of recycled paper fibers, gypsum, and water (without binders). The components are pressed into a stable and odor-neutral board under high pressure.
The 18 mm thick gypsum fiberboards are available with three different perforation patterns:
With the scattered, full, and block perforations, the customer designs the ceiling according to their wishes. The perforated area is completely covered with acoustic fleece.
THE VARIOMODULAR-PIPE 11.6 x 1.5
The aluminium multi-layer composite pipe from Variotherm is flexible yet dimensionally stable. The VarioModular-Pipe (aluminium multi-layer composite pipe) has five layers that are bonded together. This guarantees an easily bendable yet dimensionally stable pipe. The laser-welded pipe is 100% oxygen diffusion-tight. The metal prevents oxygen ingress, making possible sludge formation almost impossible. The aluminium layer guarantees up to nine times less linear expansion than conventional plastic pipes.
Simple and quick to install
The flexible Variotherm ModularPanels are installed in Drywall Construction and can also be added later. Both metal and wooden constructions are suitable as substructures.
Here's how it works: Align each panel in position and screw it in place. The joint adhesive at the edge connects the panels 100%. The VarioModular-Pipe (aluminium multi-layer composite pipe) embedded in the back is connected to the cooling and heating circuit distributor. The cooling and heating ceiling is ready for plastering and painting.

Surface and coating
After filling, the ModularPanels can be painted with commercially available paints such as latex, emulsion, or varnish paints. Mineral paints such as lime and silicate paints must be approved by the manufacturer for use on gypsum fiberboards. Typically, the panels are painted in two coats.
Frequently Asked Questions
The acoustic ceiling combines two functions: it regulates the room temperature (heating/cooling) through integrated pipe registers and simultaneously reduces reverberation and noise with perforated panels with acoustic fleece.
Ideal for rooms with many sound reflections, such as offices, meeting rooms, schools, or open living spaces with smooth surfaces.
While both systems emit heat and cold through radiation, the acoustic ceiling additionally offers a significant improvement in room acoustics. The perforated surfaces remain fully effective, as the pipes do not cover the holes.
Yes, the acoustic ceiling also works as a Low Temperature System. This reduces heating costs, and in the summer, the system cools quietly and efficiently without additional air conditioning units.
