The healthy alternative to air conditioning.
A Ceiling Cooling helps you keep a cool head on hot days. It is a healthy alternative to the conventional air conditioner and can also be retrofitted: in offices, retail spaces, single-family homes, and apartments. Cooling is applied over the entire ceiling surface. This creates a uniform and pleasant room temperature. You feel completely comfortable.
And the best part? In winter, the ModularCeiling also heats your rooms pleasantly and comfortably.
This is how cooling is done through the ceiling.
With a Variotherm Ceiling Cooling, you stay cool through the summer – without drafts and silently. A water-based ceiling cooling is an area cooling system and works through radiation exchange: Cold water circulates through the aluminium multi-layer composite pipes, cooling the ceiling over its entire surface. Humans release excess body heat to the cool surfaces. A pleasant and cool indoor climate spreads.
Ceiling cooling systems operate free of drafts. And they cool silently. Thus, the cooling ceiling can also run at night. The ideal alternative to air conditioning.
Feel-good climate: Why surface cooling is so comfortable
In contrast to an air conditioner, Ceiling Cooling does not blow cold air through the room. Because: It works through radiation exchange. The human body can slowly get used to the temperature difference between outside and the pleasantly cool room. No more cold shock.
Ceiling Cooling works silently and can also run at night – ensuring a good night's sleep.
Our tip: A well-insulated house with an effective storage mass additionally saves real money, as the rooms require less energy to be cooled.
If the Variotherm Ceiling Cooling is connected to a heating source, it can also function as Heating in winter. This way, you have a comfortable climate all year round in no time!

How and why a ceiling heating works
The ceiling heating radiates the room and warms it comfortably. It is laid out over a large area and can therefore operate with low flow temperatures. Warm air rises. Do we then get a hot head and cold feet with ceiling heating? No. Because good ceiling heating systems work, unlike conventional convection heating systems (e.g., radiators), with pleasant and healthy radiant heat and very small temperature differences.
In short: It is an area heating system and uses the entire surface for heat transfer. The rays spread out at a right angle to the surface. With ceiling heating, this means from top to bottom. When the rays hit a solid body, it is warmed.
Are there also disadvantages to ceiling cooling?
When comparing the acquisition costs with an air conditioning system, these are higher for a ceiling cooling system. However, during operation, the energy costs for a water-based ceiling cooling system are up to 30% lower than the electricity costs of an air conditioning system. Thus, the surface heating and cooling system pays for itself within a few years. Additionally, the ceiling cools silently and without drafts – it can also run at night.
THE COMPLETE SYSTEM
The cooling ceiling is a flexible panel system made of ecologically tested gypsum fiberboards. The VarioModular-Pipes (aluminium multi-layer composite pipes) are already integrated into the back of the panel. It is both cooling and ceiling in one. If it is connected to a heating source in winter, it becomes a ceiling heating.
This is how a ceiling cooling/heating system for drywall construction is structured
1 Metal or wood substructure
2 the module panels with integrated VarioModule pipes
3 Pre-insulated VarioModule pipe (supply lines for the heating circuits)
Which energy source does a ceiling cooling require?
Anyone who wants to cool with the Variotherm ceiling needs cooled water. Ideally, the energy for this is obtained directly from the environment – through deep drilling, surface collectors, or a heat pump.
The latter draws the necessary energy from environmentally friendly sources such as air, earth, or groundwater. The integrated compressor generates the water temperature required for Cooling, ranging from 16 to 20 °C.
Certified Fire Protection Board
The Variotherm Ceiling Cooling/Heating has been certified as a fire protection panel by the Institute for Fire Protection Technology and Safety Research Linz (IBS). The Variotherm ModularPanels have preventive and defensive fire protection properties.
It is important that the component withstands fire for a certain period of time. The Variotherm ModularPanels have been certified as a fire protection panel by the Institute for Fire Protection Technology and Safety Research Linz (IBS).
The 18 mm thin ModularPanels correspond in terms of fire protection to a 12.5 mm FERMACELL gypsum fiberboard (Test IBS-Linz No. VFA2001-0389.01, fire protection assessment file number 10111710).

WELL THOUGHT OUT TECHNOLOGY
The substructure of the Variotherm ceiling cooling consists of metal or wood. The basis for the ceiling cooling/heating is the substructure made of wood or metal profiles. The construction can be erected with or without surface cladding or cavity insulation and vapor barriers (vapor barrier).
Substructures made of wood or metal.
It should be noted
For wooden substructures, the construction timber used must be sufficiently dry and straight and comply with ÖNORM EN 338 (sorting class C24). For metal substructures, the profiles must be made of soft unalloyed steels with a double-sided galvanization coating of at least 100 g/m² according to ÖNORM/DIN 18182-1. The substructure must be designed for the weight of the ModularPanels (20.5 kg/m²). Additional loads such as ceiling lights, multilayer cladding, and built-in components must be considered separately.
THE VARIOMODULAR-PIPE 11.6 x 1.5
The aluminium multi-layer composite pipe from Variotherm is flexible yet dimensionally stable. The VarioModular-Pipe (aluminium multi-layer composite pipe) has five layers that are bonded together. This guarantees an easily bendable yet dimensionally stable pipe. The laser-welded pipe is 100% oxygen diffusion-tight. The metal prevents oxygen ingress, making possible sludge formation almost impossible. The aluminium layer guarantees up to nine times less linear expansion than conventional plastic pipes.
And this is how it works: Align each panel into position and screw it in place. The joint adhesive at the edge connects the panels 100%. The VarioModular-Pipe (aluminium multi-layer composite pipe) inserted in the back is connected to the cooling and heating circuit distributor. The cooling and heating ceiling is ready for plastering and painting.

Surface and coating
After filling, the ModularPanels can be painted with commercially available paints such as latex, emulsion, or varnish paints. Mineral paints such as lime and silicate paints must be approved by the manufacturer for use on gypsum fiberboards. Typically, the panels are painted in two coats.
