Heat living spaces with large glass surfaces sustainably.

Trench Heating System

Architecturally thought-out

Floor-to-ceiling window areas convey freedom and offer a wonderful view outside. However, in the autumn and winter months, the cold penetrates the room through the large glass surfaces. At low temperatures, the impact of the cold is unpleasantly noticeable. But: A trench heating system shields the cold from outside and thus prevents condensation on the glass surfaces.

Crystal-clear advantages

The Trench Heating System effectively shields against cold bridges and ensures pleasant comfort.

Unique.

The Variotherm Trench Heating System has the heating element directly at the glass surface. This quickly builds up a warm air curtain along the cold surfaces, shielding them from the effects of cold.

Details and Components

All Variotherm Trench Heating Systems are delivered pre-assembled in the correct length and only need to be aligned and screwed on site. Optionally, Variotherm supply and return valves or 3/4" connection elbows for the supply pipe can also be pre-assembled.

The holes for the supply pipes are made, according to customer requirements, either in the end caps or in the side walls.

This is how a trench heating system is constructed.

How a Trench Heating System Works

The floor convectors are recessed into the floor and flush with the floor covering. They are installed directly in front of large glass surfaces. The heart of the Variotherm underfloor heating is the heating element: a copper pipe with attached aluminum fins. Warm water flows through the pipe, heating the fins.
A warm air curtain forms along the cold glass surface – the cold from outside is shielded, and the room is comfortably warm. This physical reaction is called the Coandã Effect.

It is important that the heating element is installed directly on the window side to effectively shield the cold air. At the same time, there is minimal air circulation.

Our tip: To ensure that the trench heating system is actually flush with the finished floor, you should consider the height of the floor covering during planning.

Individual planning

We not only deliver high-quality heating and cooling systems, but also plan each project individually – house by house, room by room, precisely according to our comfort criteria. Thanks to precise heating and cooling load calculations, we ensure maximum efficiency and optimal comfort.

This creates a tailor-made solution that perfectly fits your project – for a pleasant indoor climate all year round.

Technology and Models

The heating elements specially developed by Variotherm are the technical heart of the Skirting Heating System. Highly efficient in performance. Optimized in heat output.

Stable. Adjusted. Without underfilling.

Another feature of the Variotherm Trench Heating System is the adjustment screws.
Due to its stable design, the Trench Heating System is walkable immediately after installation without any underfilling.

Heating elements

The heating elements are the technical core of the Variotherm Trench Heating System. They work very efficiently and distribute the heat optimally.

The elements consist of a copper pipe ø 18 × 0.5 mm (DIN EN 12 449) with aluminum fins 56 × 78 mm. Through the special production process, the pipe and the aluminum fins are connected. This makes them particularly powerful.

BKH1 and BKH1 mini

The Trench Heating System BKH1 is characterized by a single, powerful heating element. Its width is 180 mm. It is available in two different heights, 140 mm or 90 mm. The length is freely selectable and can be custom-ordered to meet structural requirements.

BKH2 and BKH2 mini

The more powerful Trench Heating System BKH2 features two heating elements for even more heating power. Its width is 260 mm. The BKH2 is available in two height variants, 140 mm and 90 mm. The length is freely selectable and can be delivered exactly to size.

Colors

The grids are available in the colors natural aluminum (EV1), light bronze (C 32), and black (C 35).

Immediately accessible.

After connecting the trench heating system to the heating circuit, the screed can be applied and then the flooring can be laid. If the linear or roll grilles are installed, the trench is immediately walkable.

Simple and quick to install

All trench heating systems are delivered by Variotherm in the correct length, fully pre-assembled, and only need to be aligned and screwed in place on site. The trench can be precisely adjusted to the desired floor level using the internal adjustment screws. Adjustments can be made at any time afterwards. No underfilling is necessary.

Fitter installs trench heating system with black grille directly in front of a large glass front.

Dimensioning and Arrangement

When planning the trench heating system, the maximum flow temperature is important to ensure the room becomes comfortable – we recommend a maximum of 60 °C. If the flow temperature is higher, the fin temperature exceeds the temperature of dust smoldering. This can lead to unhealthy breathing air. The most pleasant room climate is achieved with a maximum flow temperature of 50 to 55 °C.

The Ideal Case:
The optimal cold insulation is achieved when the Trench Heating System is installed along the entire glass surface (glass surfaces in contact with the ground, such as in conservatories, patio doors).

Recommended maximum length of a heating circuit:
BKH1, BKH1 mini: 7.5 m (7.5 m heating element) BKH2, BKH2 mini: 5.0 m (10 m heating element)

Those who combine the Trench Heating System with an area heating (Floor, Wall, Ceiling) completely cover the heat demand and achieve an all-around comfortable room climate.
